Biography

Debbie Claassen is a geologist that started her career in the Eastern Cape of South Africa mapping the geology of the Cape Fold Belt and Karoo Supergroup in the Eastern Cape, which included the production of 18 published map sets and various map explanations and lithostratigraphic classifications for the South African Committee for Stratigraphy (SACS) over the last 15 years. She became involved in the broader site area and vicinity geological investigations for the proposed nuclear power plant at Thyspunt as well as Thyspunt SSR from 2008-2013. This included undertaking fault and marine terrace studies in support of the Seismic Hazard Analysis. She completed her MSc (cum laude, 2015) in the field of integrated science focused on creating a geoscience framework for South Africa’s second proposed nuclear power plant. Following this, her work took a strong interest in Cenozoic studies, conducting investigations on alluvial diamonds in the Free State, Northwest and Northern Cape provinces during 2015-2017. She is currently conducting research on the formation and evolution of Quaternary erosional gullies (dongas) in the North-Eastern Cape region of South Africa: future predictions for socio-economic developments adapted to climate changes as part of a PhD degree at the Nelson Mandela University. As part of the Duynefontyn SSM TI Team, she is also leading the marine terrace studies within the site region as part of the data supplementing studies in support of the Seismic Hazard Analysis.
