Biography
Prof. Dr Andrzej Sechman, PhD, DSc. Currently: Vice-Rector for Cooperation at the University of Agriculture in Krakow (UAK; since September 2024), Head of the Department of Animal Physiology and Endocrinology, Faculty of Animal Science (since 2014) Education: 4th High School in Krakow; 1979 – 1984: Agricultural University of Krakow (AUK), Faculty of Animal Science, field of study: animal science, MSc thesis supervisor: prof. Dr Janusz Rząsa, PhD, DSc.; 1987: Postgraduate Studies in Mathematics (Jagiellonian University); 1990: PhD in agricultural sciences, discipline of animal science, specialty in animal physiology and endocrinology, doctoral thesis entitled ”Thyroid hormones in ovarian follicles in chickens”, supervisor prof. Dr Józef Niezgoda, PhD, DSc; 2003: habilitated doctor in agricultural sciences, the discipline of animal science, specialty of animal physiology and endocrinology, based on the assessment of scientific achievements, habilitation thesis entitled "Ovary – a target tissue for thyroid hormones in the hen (Gallus domesticus)" and the habilitation colloquium at the Faculty of Animal Science, UAK; 2009: appointment to the position of associate professor; 2012: title of professor of agricultural sciences, the discipline of animal science, specialty of animal physiology and endocrinology. Since 1984, he has been employed at the AUK (currently UAK), Department of Animal Physiology (currently Department of Animal Physiology and Endocrinology); 2012 - 2020 Vice-Dean for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Animal Science; since 2014 he has been head of the Department of Animal Physiology and Endocrinology; 2020-2024 Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at UAK. Most important scientific internships: 1992 – 1993 (1 year), 1998 (1 month) and 2000 (1 month) at the Department of Animal Physiology, Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan; JSPS scholarship. Principal investigator of 5 grants and contractor in 9 NCN/MNiSW/KBN projects. The most important directions of scientific research: the role of thyroid hormones in the regulation of ovarian function in domestic birds; the role of iodothyronines in the regulation of metabolic processes in birds and mammals; regulation of the function of the reproductive system in birds; the influence of factors disturbing the function of the endocrine system, the so-called "endocrine disruptors", on the function of the HPT and HPG axes in birds. Organizational activity: member of the organizing and scientific committees of numerous national and international conferences. Member of the Biological Commission of the Krakow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (since February 19, 2021); member of the Committee on Veterinary Sciences and Biology of Reproduction of the Polish Academy of Sciences (since 2015 - present); member of the Committee on Animal Reproduction of the Polish Academy of Sciences; member of the Reproduction Section (2015 - 2020); member of the Committee on Biology of Animal Reproduction of the Polish Academy of Sciences (later: Committee on Biology of Reproduction of the Polish Academy of Sciences); 2007 - 2011 member of the presidium and chairman of the Committee on Biology of Avian Reproduction; member of the Endocrinology Team of the Committee on Biology of Reproduction of the Polish Academy of Sciences; European Society for New Methods in Agricultural Research (ESNA; 1993 to 2020); member of the Polish Branch of the WPSA; member of the Society of Biology of Reproduction (TBR), Secretary of the Krakow Branch of TBR (2002 - 2008), Chairman of the Krakow Branch of TBR (2008 - 2014), Member of the Main Board of TBR (2008 - 2014; 2017 - 2024), President of TBR (term of office: 2017 - 2021), Vice-President (since 2021). Research and teaching employee at URK: author of study programs and several courses in the fields of; biotechnology, applied biology, animal bioengineering, zootechnics, animal ethology and psychology. Decorations: 2002 Silver Cross of Merit; 2010 Medal of Merit for the Mogilany Commune for social activity; 2016 Medal of the National Education Commission; 2017 Gold Medal for Long Service; Team and Individual Awards for scientific and organizational achievements of the Rector of UAK.
