Biography
Dimitrios I. Bourdas, a native of Athens, Greece, is a distinguished scholar with a profound background in Exercise Physiology, Sports Science and Adults Education. He embarked on his academic journey by pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education at the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece). Building upon this strong foundation, he furthered his education by obtaining a Master's degree in Sports Coaching from The University of Sheffield (United Kingdom). Dr. Bourdas's intellectual journey reached its zenith with the completion of his doctoral dissertation in 2015, which focused on the intricate interplay between human performance and the physiological aspects of breath-hold diving. This groundbreaking research was conducted at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Throughout his career, Dr. Bourdas has been deeply committed to the field of education. He has served as a sport coach and as an educator across all levels of the Greek educational system, including primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Furthermore, he has held leadership positions within various public academic institutions, including roles as a scientific manager, author of specialized courses, and developer of National Training Guides for sports coaching specialties of Higher Vocational Training Schools. His contributions also extend to the creation of national educational manuals and topic banks for these specialties. Dr. Bourda's extensive professional portfolio includes his current position as the Director of the public Higher Vocational Training School of Chania, as well as his role as an external researcher at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Additionally, he shares his wealth of knowledge by teaching in several postgraduate programs at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In the realm of scientific inquiry, Dr. Bourdas's research spans a diverse range of topics, including sport medicine, exercise physiology, human performance in extreme environments, human breath-hold diving physiology, environmental physiology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, basketball, human metabolism, and sport nutrition. He has also conducted research on the relationship between physical activity and SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as the domains of team sport coaching and sport psychology. Dr. Bourdas's groundbreaking findings and research outcomes have not only been presented at numerous international conferences but have also resulted in a prolific body of original scientific publications. Beyond his academic pursuits, Dimitrios is an accomplished world-life photographer, a Scuba Diving instructor, a Scuba Lifesaving and Accident Management diver, a First Aid Trainer instructor, an alpinist, a spelunker, an ultra-distance mountain runner, and a dedicated blood donor.
