Biography

Senior Scientist at CENIM-CSIC, leading the research group “Atmospheric Corrosion and Cultural Heritage Conservation” (CAPAC). Graduated in Fine Arts Conservation in 1996, I obtained his PhD in 2001 from the Complutense University of Madrid, after an internship at the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI), Ottawa. In 2006 I obtained a Tenured Scientist position at CENIM-CSIC. My research work has focused in the study of corrosion and protective systems for the metallic cultural heritage, atmospheric corrosion in museums and exhibitions; and the application of electrochemical techniques for the conservation of cultural heritage. I have published more than 125 scientific articles (104 in WoS/Scopus indexed publications), and presented at more than 130 scientific conferences. I have participated in 40 national and international research projects (6th and 7th Framework Programmes and Horizon 2020 from the EU), being PI in 18 of them in the last 10 years, obtaining more than 2.5 M€ of funding in competitive calls. These projects and several research contracts have been developed in collaboration with relevant institutions working on conservation of cultural heritage (Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España, Patrimonio Nacional, Museo del Prado, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, etc.).
I have been Spanish Representative in the Executive Board of the Joint Programming Initiative “Cultural Heritage and Global Change: a Challenge for Europe” from 2011-2017. Assistant Coordinator of the International Council of Museums-Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC) Metal Working Group from 2012-2020; Coordinator of the Spanish Network for Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (Technoheritage) from 2015-2022; Fellow of the International Institute of Conservation (IIC) and member of the Spanish group of the IIC (GE-IIC); Coordinator of the CSIC Interdisciplinary Platform “Open Heritage: Research and Society” from 2023-2024 (being member of the coordination team since 2019).
I am National Coordinator of the Spanish Node of the European Research Infrastructure on Heritage Science (E-RIHS) since 2016, coordinating facilities from 8 Spanish institutions, and working towards the establishment of E-RIHS as an ERIC (expeted by the end of 2024).
