Biography
Matthias Rath, born 1959 in Schweinfurt (Germany). From 1979-1984 studies in philosophy, pedagogic, german, psychology and sociology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt (Germany). Diploma in pedagogics (1984), PhD (1987) and habilitation (1992) in philosophy. 1994-1995 he was Vice President Corporate Issues and spokesman of the international media house Bertelsmann AG and 1995-1996 Executive Vice President Public Relations of the international Bertelsmann Book Company (today Random House). Since 1997 Matthias Rath is professor for philosophy and ethics at the University of Education in Ludwigsburg (Germany), where he is one of the Heads of the Forschungsstelle Jugend - Medien - Bildung (Research Center Youth - Media - Education). Since 1995-2010 he was Member of the Board of the Bertelsmann Wissenschaftsstiftung (Bertelsmann Science Foundation). 2001-2006 he was member and 2004-2006 spokesman of the Bildungsrat Baden-Württemberg (State Council of Education). 2005-2014 he was also Scientific Member of the Board of the Landesinstitut für Schulentwicklung Baden-Württemberg (State Institute of School Development). In 2008 he became Member of the Board of the Gesellschaft für Medienbildungsforschung (Association for Media Education Research), Germany. His field of research covers media ethics, empirical media research and education politics.
