Biography
Berjo is a physician-researcher from Cameroon dedicated to advancing global access to safe, equitable, timely, and affordable surgical and neurosurgical care. His work spans evidence-based research, education, health system strengthening, and technological innovation.
He has led several prominent surgery, trauma, and neurosurgery interest organizations, facilitating South-South and North-South collaborations among students, residents, and consultants. As Director of Operations and now as a senior research fellow at the Association of Future African Neurosurgeons (AFAN), he has contributed to a significant number of peer-reviewed publications in decent journals, and presented research at esteemed conferences such as the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), EEANS, and Spine Summit conferences.
He developed a clinical neuroanatomy course to address educational inequities and foster a skilled neurosurgical workforce in developing nations. He has also been an advocate for integrating medical students into neurosurgical care and supporting global neurosurgery efforts like folate fortification.
His work in optimizing global surgery in developing countries includes contributing to the development of national surgical plans across Africa using a unique health policy analysis framework. His efforts have been recognized with best abstract presentation prizes and travel scholarships to global surgery conferences such as the Bethune Round Table and the Global Anesthesia Surgery and Obstetrics Collaboration (GASOC) Conferences. He has also collaborated on a “task-shifting” project with partners from India and the United States to empower community health workers to deliver guided surgical care in rural India.
As Associate Editor at the Pan-African Medical Journal (PAMJ) and a member of the editorial board of the Global Pediatric Health Journal, he ensures the publication of unbiased, timely, and high-quality scientific reviews. His role as a certified peer-review mentor at the Clarivate Web of Science Academy involves guiding early-career researchers in constructive peer review.
He holds memberships with the Society of Neuro-Oncology (past), the British Neuro-Oncology Society (BNOS), International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and the BJS Society. He has been invited to speak about neuro-oncology at the BNOS and the Society for Neuro-Oncology Sub-Saharan Africa annual conferences.
