Biography

José V. Prata received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the New University of Lisbon in 1997 under the supervision of Prof. Sundaresan Prabhakar and Prof. Ana M. Lobo. He was a research fellow and vice-Director of Research at a pharmaceutical company (Hovione, SA) prior to joining the faculty at ISEL/IPL where he is currently Professor Coordenador in the fields of Organic Chemistry, Industrial Organic Chemistry and Processes, and Polymer Science. His research focuses on calixarene chemistry, calixarene-based functional polymers and materials derived thereof for sensory and optoelectronic devices, self-assembling and catalysis. His research activities are also oriented towards the synthesis, characterization and applications of carbon nanomaterials (viz. carbon dots) derived from renewable natural resources, in particular industrial wastes.
