Biography

Dr. Yong Rui is the Corporate CTO and Senior Vice President of Lenovo Group, a member of Lenovo Executive Committee, Lenovo’s highest decision-making committee, and Vice Chairman of Lenovo Technology Committee. He oversees $2.5B R&D annual budget and directs Lenovo’s technical strategies and R&D directions. Additionally, Dr. Rui leads Lenovo Research that investigates AI, 5G, cloud and edge computing, XR/metaverse, intelligent devices, and smart vertical solutions.
Prior to joining Lenovo, Dr. Rui spent 18 years with Microsoft where he held various leadership roles in R&D strategy, basic research, technology incubation and product development, and most recently served as Deputy Managing Director of Microsoft Research Asia.
A Fellow of ACM, IEEE, AAAS, IAPR and SPIE, and a foreign member of Academy of Europe and Canadian Academy of Engineering, Dr. Rui is recognized as a leading expert in AI, multimedia analysis and retrieval, and distributed video conferencing. He is a recipient of the 2018 ACM SIGMM Technical Achievement Award, the 2017 IEEE SMC Society Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award, the 2017 ACM TOMM Nicolas Georganas Best Paper Award, the 2016 IEEE Computer Society Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award, the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award, and the 2010 Most Cited Paper of the Decade Award from Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation. He holds 112 issued patents, has published 4 books, 12 book chapters, and 260 refereed journal and conference papers. With 33,484 citations, and an h-Index of 88, his publications are among the most referenced.
Dr. Rui has served on numerous international and national science and engineering program committees, editorial boards, and review panels, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Australian Research Council, and Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. He contributes to the research community tirelessly. He was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE MultiMedia magazine and a founding Editor of International Journal of Multimedia Information Retrieval. He was an Associate Editor of ACM Trans. on Multimedia Computing, Communication and Applications, IEEE Access, IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems for Video Technologies, ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal, and International Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications. He sits on the Steering Committees of ACM Multimedia, ACM ICMR, and IEEE ICME.
Dr. Rui is also a strong industry leader who turns technologies into real-life products. At Lenovo, he is one of the key drivers of the 3S (Smart IoT, Smart Infrastructure and Smart Verticals) strategy, which is transforming Lenovo significantly beyond PCs. Under his leadership, Lenovo has developed award winning products including ThinkReality A3 (TIME 100 Best Innovations), Lenovo AI/HPC products (HPCWire Award), Lenovo 5G (GSMA Foundry Excellence Award), Lenovo Supply Chain Intelligence (Gartner Global Supply Chain Top 25 Award), Lenovo advanced planning and scheduling LAPS for smart manufacturing (Franz Edelman Finalist), and Lenovo foldable and rollable devices (MWC awards). At Microsoft, Dr. Rui and his team have developed and shipped products used by millions of users around the world, including Microsoft Bing Search (image search, video search and entity search), Microsoft XiaoIce, Microsoft Satori (entity graph), Microsoft Office (RoundTable, OneNote and Sway), Microsoft OneDrive (photo tagging), Microsoft Hololens (3D reconstruction), and Microsoft Cognitive Services on Azure (image and video analysis). Dr. Rui’s industry leadership has been featured in MIT Technology Review, HPC Wire, Tech Republic, Geek Metaverse, EdgeIR, and Fortune Italy.
Dr. Rui received his BS from Southeast University Summa cum laude, his MS from Tsinghua University, and his PhD from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is a Distinguished Alumni of UIUC ECE Department.
