Biography
Thais Rocha is an Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a Research Fellow at Harris Manchester, University of Oxford. She is the co-director of the Being Egyptian Project hosted by the Egypt Exploration Society and her current research focuses on how ancient Egyptians conceived and experienced domestic space. Building on her DPhil devoted to investigating domestic space at the Workmen's Village of Amarna through an anthropological-oriented framework, she expanded the scope chronologically and geographically. This investigation is anchored in recent theoretical developments in household archaeology, material culture, and ethnographic research. She explores new methodologies to understand houses through material culture, especially related to the social construction of the domestic sphere. Thais' postdoctoral project at the University of São Paulo (FAPESP Grants 20/13319-9 and 22/10406-3) explored social practices and sensory aspects of houses. In 2023 she was a Research Visitor at NINO, University of Leiden, University of Vienna, and Visiting Research Fellow at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge.
