Biography

Dr. O Usta received his BEng and MSc in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and received his PhD in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Bath. He then re-joined ITU in 1993 where he is presently a Professor of Power System Protection and Automation. He has been responsible for developing and running highly successful courses on Smart Grid such as Computer Networks for Power Systems, Computer Relaying for Power Systems, Power System Control and Communications vs.

Dr. Usta’s research interests includes smart grid protection, monitoring, control and automation. He has published numerous conference and journal papers. He is currently an investigator and primary consultant on a number of research and technological developments projects on Smart Grids funded by TUBİTAK, ITU and different parts of the Turkish Industry including Remote Reading of Electricity Meters, Design of Network and Power Quality Analyzer, Design of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) for Power Systems Protection and Automation, Integrated Protection for Microgrids, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Power Generation for İSKİ.

Prof. Dr. Usta was the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department between 2007 and 2010, and the Dean of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Faculty between 2010 and 2013 at Istanbul Technical University. He was the General Chair of IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2014 held in Istanbul and also 2023 IEEE PES GT&D Conference and Exhibition Istanbul. He is the ABET Coordinator of Electrical Engineering Program which was re-accredited by the ABET in 2018. He is married and has two sons.
