Biography
Virgínia Infante has a graduation (1998) and a doctorate (2002) in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa.
Since 2024, she is a Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico in the Scientific Area of Mechanical Design and Engineering Materials of the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM) of IST, Universidade de Lisboa. Virgínia Infante perform her habilitation (“Agregação”) in July 2020 in the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM) of IST, Universidade de Lisboa.
Since 2020, Virgínia Infante is Vice President of IDMEC (Institute of Mechanical Engineering) for Administrative and Financial Matters. She is also an associated researcher of IDMEC (Institute of Mechanical Engineering), LAETA (Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transports and Aeronautics) and IPFN (Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion) for the areas of Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Mechanical Design and Maintenance.
Currently, she is member of Scientific-Pedagogical Council of DEM, Secretary of the Board of the DEM Council, Responsible of Composites Laboratory and Coordinator of Tutorial Program in DEM/IST. Until 2020, she was a member of the Executive Board of DEM, being responsible for coordinating the Public Relations (divulgation, web management, study visits, marketing).
She was responsible for several courses, namely “Mechanical Behaviour of Materials”, “Project Management”, “Materials in Engineering”, “Maintenance and Safety” and “Maintenance, Quality and Safety” in Bachelor (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes at IST, having received an excellent rating by students in most editions. She supervised and co-supervised seven PhD thesis. She supervised and co-supervised more than 100 MSc thesis.
She has 133 indexed publications in SCOPUS, with 1529 citations, and the h-index is 22.
She is responsible for 5 European research projects, 8 national research projects and a participant in another 18 research projects, having brought to the institution a funding of more than 4.2 M€. She has also participated in 12 Industrial projects and over 25 Technical Consultation and Industry Support works. She is also ANI ’s expert for proposals evaluation of R&DT Programmes.
Virgínia Infante is Subject Editor for Transportation of the international scientific journal “Engineering Failure Analysis” and member of Editorial Board of “Procedia Structural Integrity”.
