Biography
Silvia Álvarez is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials of the Complutense University of Madrid. She received a PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2014 working on the removal of emerging contaminants by adsorption processes. She had a Juan de la Cierva-Formation contract at Autónoma de Madrid University, Madrid, Spain, in 2016. She undertook four postdoctoral research, Concepción University in Chile, Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro University in Vila real, Portugal Autónoma University, Spain, and Polytechnic Institute of Bragança in Portugal. Her research is focused on the synthesis and characterization of carbon materials with enhanced properties and their catalytic application in Adsorption, Environmental Catalysis and Biomass Valorization. Since 2010 she has belonged to CyPS (UCM) research group, that was recognised with the Excellent mark by Agencia Estatal de Investigación in the last evaluation, 2023. She has published 117 publications, 81 papers in JCR journals (2/3 in Q1, 49 in 2019-2023 (www.ucm.es/gcyps)) (H index: 32 and more than 3800 citations). She has sent more than 110 communication to congresses (2/3 internationals). 14 book chapters. She has supervised 4 doctoral theses (2 with International Mention and 1 with Industrial PhD Mention) and currently co-directing 2 Doctoral Thesis (FPI and international PhD), more than 18 Master Thesis and 7 supervision of international students. So far, she has participated in more than 14 research projects financed by public funds, National Plan, European and Community of Madrid and in more than 14 projects funded by companies (Art. 83 LOU, Art. 60 LOSU) (in 3 of them as main researcher). She has participated as reviewer of project in the National Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile and the National Science Center (Ministry of Science and Higher Education) of Polonia. Moreover, she has cooperated in the organization of several international scientific events (Waterwaste18, GeenChemistry18, APMC-18, Waterwaste19, GEET-19, MNs-19, GEET-20, GreenChemistry20, WWEM-22, GreenChem-22, GEET-22), responsible for the organization of the Symposium entitled "GS-06: Global Symposium on Emerging Contaminants: Recent Advances on Removal Treatments of Emerging Contaminants from Water and Wastewater" in the framework of the II-CIBIQ, within the World Congress on Chemical Engineering, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2023. 5th Technology and Knowledge Transfer Award of the Complutense University. Transfer Award to the Project of the research group entitled "Development of cyclic adsorption processes applied in the chemical industry". Member of the monitoring evaluation panel of the Bachelor, Master and PhD Programmes of the UCM from 2021 to the present. She is Editor of Chemical Engineering Science Journal (Elsevier), and Secretary of the Working Party on Fluid Separations Association (EFCE). She is a member of the Asociación Nacional de Químicos e Ingenieros Químicos de España (ANQUE) and Sociedad Española de Adsorción (SeAd). Editor of special issues of JCR-indexed scientific journals such as Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Springer), Catalysis (MDPI), Applied Sciences (MDPI). Member of the Editorial Committee of the Colombian journal Virtual Pro, published in Colombia Edition of a Special Issue on the III International Congress of Chemical Engineering (ANQUE-CIBIQ 2019). She has two periods of investigation (2 sexenios).
