Biography
António Costa Canas is Military Teacher at Portuguese Naval Academy. He holds a PhD in History, with specialization in Portuguese Discoveries and Expansion, from the University of Lisbon - School of Arts and Humanities, with the thesis: A obra náutica de João Baptista Lavanha (C. 1550-1624). He also holds a Master's degree in History of the Portuguese Discoveries and Expansion from the University of Lisbon - School of Arts and Humanities, defending his dissertation: Longitude in 17th century Nautical Science: The work of Father Cristóvão Bruno. His academic degrees include also a Bachelor of Arts in History, from the University of Lisbon - School of Arts and Humanities, and a Bachelor of Science, from Portuguese Naval Academy. Main areas of research: History of Nautical Science, History of Mathematics, and contributions of naval officers to various branches of scientific knowledge, namely: Astronomy, Maths, Meteorology, and Navigation, among others.
