Biography

I studied geology (BSc) and physical geography (BSC, MSc) at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. I started my career at the Soil Survey Institute, and worked on the geomorphological mapping of the Netherlands and on the Dutch Soil Classification System. In 1990 I moved to the field of pedometrics. In 1993 I got my PhD degree at the Wageningen University. My main fields of interest are sampling theory, geostatistics, (generalized) linear mixed modeling, machine learning techniques for mapping, and uncertainty analysis. I have rich research experience in developing and applying statistical methods for natural resources inventory and monitoring. In 2015 I was appointed Adjunct Professor at Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, China where I teached sampling theory and spatial statistics. I am second co-author of the book ’Sampling for Natural Resource Monitoring’, published in 2006 by Springer. This book is widely acclaimed in soil, earth, environmental, agriculture, and statistical sciences. In 2022 my new book Spatial Sampling with R was published in the well-known R Series of CRC Press.
