Biography
Lúcia Almeida Matos is an Associate Professor of Art Studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto (FBAUP), Portugal, and a member of the research group Museum Studies of Instituto de História da Arte (IHA) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. She holds a PhD in Art Studies from FBAUP, an MA in Art History and an MPhil in Humanities from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Humanities, University of Porto.
Lúcia Almeida Matos is currently Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, UPorto. She is the director of the MA program in Art Studies and coordinates FBAUP’s art collection and exhibitions program. Her research interests are focused on the documentation of the production, display, and reception of modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on strategies for the conservation of contemporary art.
Contributions to this field include leading and/or participating in national and international research projects and networks. These include, among others, coordination of the project Documentation of Contemporary Art, funded by FCT, which involved several universities and museums in Portugal and Spain and was dedicated to the documentation of works by Portuguese contemporary artists; participation in the European Marie Curie project New Approaches in the Conservation of Contemporary Art (NACCA) which involved universities, museums, and other cultural organizations. She was a member of the international Network for Conservation of Contemporary Art Research (NECCAR), funded by NWO, and of the International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (INCCA). Her research interests also led to involvement in the development of strategies to improve public access to collections and she has been a team member of the nationally funded R&D project titled Cooperative Holistic View on Internet Content (CHIC).
She has supervised PhD research and has integrated evaluation panels of PhD vivas, on these subjects. She has organized and co-organized scientific meetings in Portugal and served on evaluation panels of scientific projects, scientific research units, and higher education curricula. She has been a member of scientific committees of conferences and publications, both in Portugal and abroad.
She has also published and delivered invited talks on Portuguese artists who studied in the Porto art school and benefitted from an international experience, with a focus on women artists, sculpture, art for the public space, and moments of transition, change, and sometimes defiance, within the academy.
Outreach activities, within the Faculty of Fine Arts UPorto, are centered in its art collection through exhibitions and other mediation activities in the University of Porto, and in public and private museums and institutions. She has a particular interest in involving students in practice-based research leading to the organization of exhibitions and the production of digital tools to promote access and insight into practices of art and design.
