Biography
Ajit Narayanan is Professor Emeritus at Auckland University of Technology (NZ) and Exeter University (UK). He spent over 25 years from 1980 as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Professor of Artificial Intelligence (personal chair) and Dean at the University of Exeter, UK, before moving to AUT in 2007 as Founding Head of the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences before stepping down from that role in 2013 to be Head of Research. He retired from full-time academic work in 2022.
He has nearly 200 refereed journal and international conference publications in the areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computational statistics, nature-inspired computing and machine ethics. He has authored and co-authored four books and jointly edited four collections of papers, all dealing with artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and applications of machine intelligence.
He continues to be statistical consultant on healthcare related projects, with a special interest in analysing patient satisfaction data. He also has interests in identifying potential biomarkers in gene expression data through the use of novel machine learning techniques, with specific applications to cancer and mental health.
He has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Aston in 1973 and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Exeter in 1976. He was a member of the IEEE and ACM until his retirement.
