Biography

Steven Baete joined the Center for Biomedical Imaging at New York University, School of Medicine in July 2011 as a post-Doctoral researcher to work on the development of medical imaging technology. His primary research project is funded through an NIH grant and a fellowship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF); he studies how Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can be adapted to monitor the dynamics of water diffusion in healthy and diseased muscle tissue with prof. Eric E Sigmund and how to improve q-space sampling and acquisition strategies for Diffusion Spectrum Imaging in the human brain with prof Fernando E Boada.

Before moving to New York City, Steven obtained a master degree in Engineering with a specialization in applied physics from Ghent University, Belgium. Between 2006 and 2011 he was a doctoral researcher at the research group for Quantitative MRI in medicine and biology (Ghent University) where he worked on advanced MR methods (19F and diffusion MRI) to detect and characterize tumor tissue. During this period he was awarded a fellowship from the Fund for Scientific Research (FWO). Steven, mentored by his Ph.D. advisor, Yves De Deene, successfully defended his doctoral thesis titled “Quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Characterization of Biologically Relevant Parameters for Cancer Therapy” in February 2011.

He has published in international peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at national/international conferences. In his spare time, Steven loves to jog, cycle, practice Yoga, and cook. He can be reached at steven.baete (at) gmail (dot) com.
