Biography
Mariana completed her Bachelors in Biological Sciences in 2020 at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Her thesis, titled "Microbial Ecological Succession in Antarctic Glacier Retreat Soils from the Perspective of Carbon and Phosphorus Cycles" explored the role of the photoautotrophic community in Antarctic soils. Following her Bachelor, Mariana earned her Masters in Molecular and Microbial Biology in 2024 at the University of Algarve (UAlg). "Insights into Polyhydroxyalkanoates in Extremophile Microorganisms: search for PHA-related genes and PHA accumulation in halophilic microorganisms recovered from an inland saltern", her research topic, investigated new potential PHA producers in an extremely salty environment. In 2024, Mariana started her PhD in Dr. Tessa Quax's research group at the University of Groningen, within the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB). Her current research interest focuses on viral infection in haloarchaea.
