Biography
Iveta Mikolaskova obtained the MSc degree in Clinical Oncology at the Queen Mary University of London, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and BSc(Hons) degree in Life sciences at the University of Westminster in London - a combined degree in general medicine, natural sciences of medicinal plants and clinical practice. Her research interests have led her to currently pursue a PhD in Oncology at the Institute of Immunology, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. In addition to an interest in the use of natural products in cancer prevention and treatment, her research focuses on the neurobiology / psychoneuroimmunology of cancer, analyzing the parameters of autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immunological alterations in cancer patients using heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is used to evaluate the activity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system (the level of stress) and, based on changes in the ANS balance, makes it possible to study the relationship between the level of stress and the clinical course of the disease in cancer patients. The results can be used to determine in which patients it would be most effective to inhibit the stress-induced increased sympathetic activity (e.g. by HRV-biofeedback, Mindfulness-based stress reduction, CBT approaches, etc.).
