Biography
Dr. Flores-Mireles received her Bachelor degree in Marine Biology at Autonomic University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) in Mexico, followed by a Master degree in Marine Biotechnology in the Center for Biological Research of the Northwest. La Paz, Mexico. Dr. Flores-Mireles did her PhD in Microbiology at Cornell University under Dr. Steve Winans supervision. Then, she did her postdoctoral research at Washington University School of Medicine under Dr. Scott Hultgren and Michael Caparon supervision.
In 2018, she started as her own lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, where she is currently the Janet C. and Jeffrey A. Hawk Collegiate Associate Professor. Her laboratory is working in understanding how catheter-induced bladder inflammation renders the host susceptible to catheter-associated urinary tract infections and subsequent systemic dissemination. By utilizing a comprehensive approach, combining microbial genetics, transgenic mice, clinical samples, material modification, pathogen and host transcriptomics and proteomics as well as immunological, histological, microscopic, and pharmacological techniques, her lab goals are to develop anti-fouling and biofilm catheters as well as novel antibiotic-sparing therapies against these infections.
