Biography

Professional and academic with broad experience within many contexts, cultures, communities and governance systems. Global experience in research, strategy, community building, social and technical transformation, and sustainable progress. Harnessing personal networking, lived experiences, and holistic, transdisciplinary conceptualisation skills, for results in hands-on activities sustained through collaboration and co-productions.

Lived in urban and rural areas in Belgium (2 yrs), Eswatini, India, the Netherlands, Zambia (10 yrs) and Zimbabwe (11 yrs).

Gertjan van Stam has been involved with strategic developments in societies and technologies, with specific works in circular economy, information and communication technologies, the built environment, digital health, artificial intelligence, and intersectional studies, since 1987. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Tilburg University - the Netherlands, (PhD, Culture Studies), a Master of Technology in Information Technology (MTech, cum laude) from Nelson Mandela University - South Africa, and an engineering degree in telecommunications. 

In his activities, Gertjan deploys dynamic and integrative activities embedded in both the humanities and natural sciences at the intersection of society and materiality focusing on value(s), meaning-making, and embodiment. From invited, embedded research, he reports on multiple perspectives and insights, and devises strategies and practical action that move the interaction of society, materiality, and economic life to a nuanced continuum involving inclusion and celebrates diversity/pluralism in human meaning-making, knowing, and ethical interaction.
