Biography

Gianpaolo Balzano, M.D., has specialized in pancreatic surgery for the past 20 years and has led the Pancreas Unit of the Department of Surgery of S. Raffaele Hospital in Milan since 2010. Since December 2024, he has been an Associate Professor at the University of Insubria and directs the pancreatic surgery department at the Circolo Hospital in Varese (Italy).
Surgical Experience: Performed over 1,100 pancreatic resections, including 800 pancreaticoduodenectomies (PD), as the primary surgeon.
Research Contributions: Authored 141 articles published in PubMed-indexed journals, with an H-index (as of February 2024) of 52. Conducted comprehensive studies on pancreatic surgery in Italy, highlighting shortcomings in many Italian hospitals' results. Published a method for selecting suitable hospitals for pancreatic surgery.
Innovations and Protocols: Introduced the technique of pancreatic islet autotransplantation in Italy. Pioneered the evaluation of a fast-track protocol in pancreatic surgery.
Clinical Trials and Guidelines: Served as the lead surgeon in the first Italian randomized controlled trial (RCT) on neoadjuvant chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer. Contributed to drafting Italian guidelines on acute and chronic pancreatitis, as well as the diagnostic work-up of cystic pancreatic neoplasms.
